Release of New Trade Publication
Exports of Primary and Manufactured Products 2007-08
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) publication Exports of Primary and Manufactured Products 2007-08 was released on 18 December 2008.
This publication provides a comprehensive analysis of Australian-produced merchandise trade by level of processing over the past five years based on DFAT's unique Trade Exports Classification (TREC). It includes individual reports of Australia's exports of primary products, ETM (Elaborately Transformed Manufactures) and STM (Simply Transformed Manufactures) to over 20 countries and country groups.
Key points in the document are:
• The value of Australian-produced merchandise exports rose by 8.6 per cent in 2007-08 to $234.3 billion;
• Australian-produced merchandise exports accounted for 96.3 per cent of Australia’s total merchandise exports in 2007-08;
• Exports of Primary products, Elaborately transformed manufactures and Services were all higher during the period, but exports of Simply transformed manufactures fell slightly; and
• The rise in Australia’s exports was more than offset by an 11.5 per cent rise in imports during the financial year which was underpinned by robust domestic consumption and investment
— as a result, the trade deficit increased by $7.9 billion to $20.6 billion.
The publication is published twice yearly in calendar year and financial year format. This and other trade publications can be downloaded for free, or purchased in hard copy format, from the DFAT website.
